Casts for Drawing
The tradition of drawing sculptures has a long history, and can be traced back further than Michelangelo, who was taught to draw by copying ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. When access to the original sculptures was limited, art students turned to replicating plaster casts of the artworks. This is how the traditional academic technique of drawing sculptures became known as "cast drawing" in art education.
Cast drawing is still very much alive today, with art students all over the world learning the fundamentals of portrait drawing through this traditional academic practice.
The Nicholas H Wood studio has an ever-growing collection of plaster casts which are ideal for drawing and painting. Our art reference casts are high quality, affordable and we offer fast worldwide shipping, with casts expertly packed in eco-friendly packaging.
Nick was introduced to cast drawing as a student at Charles Cecil Studios private atelier, and enjoyed teaching beginners the process. So, if you have any questions about cast drawing, please do send us an email, we're here to help :)
